The fact that the medicine has remained relatively unchanged for most of that time is a tribute to its effectiveness. Acupunture is the most popular aspect of Oriental Medicine in this country. Acpuncture is the practice of inserting very small, very thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body. The points are generally located allong specific energitic lines or meridians that cover the body. The insertion of the needles is designed to stimulate circulation and relieve physical and energetic obstructions that can result in phyical pain as well as many other health complications. Below is a partial list published by the World Health Organizations (WHO) of conditions that for which acupuncture has proven to be effective .

Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy

Allergies

Dysmenorrhoea

Facial pain

Headache

Hypertension

Knee pain

Low back pain

Morning sickness

Neck pain

Rheumatoid arthritis

Sciatica

Oriental Medicine also includes the use herbal medicine, forms of therapeutic massage, cupping (placing glass or bamboo suction cups on the body to stimulate circulation and relieve physical and energetic obstructions), moxibustion (medicinal use of the mugwort plant) and diet and lifestyle counseling.

Relatively new to the United States, Oriental Medicine first became widely known in the 1970 s. Since that time, the massive amounts of testimony to its effectiveness have caused the medicine to grow steadily. Now Oriental Medicine is available in almost every major city in the country with an estimate of over 15 million Americans using it as a form of therapy. All but two states in the US have licensing bodies to regulate acupuncture in addition to a national licensing body to help ensure a standard level of education and care for participating states. While licensing requirements differ from state to state, most states, including California, require new acupuncturists to have at least a master s degree in Oriental Medicine from a 3-4 year graduate level education program. Many health insurance companies now provide coverage for acupuncture treatments and, in some states, practitioners of Oriental Medicine are classified as primary care practitioners.

All of the practitioners at Sambodhi are committed to helping further integrate Oriental medicine into the Western based system of medicine primarily used in this country without sacrificing its unique characteristics which have accounted for the success that Oriental medicine has enjoyed over the past two thousand years. We believe in gentile, integrated aproach that consists of evaluating each patient as an individual and coming up with the best combination of acpuncture, bodywork, herb and diet recommendations to best fit each person s unique needs.
